  • Candidates who have completed their U.G/P.G degree may apply for admission to M.S./Ph.D./Direct Ph.D. programme in all Departments except IDRP.

  • Candidates applying under External category for research programme may confirm whether the current organization/industry/institution in which you are working is having R & D recognition from IIT Madras or else certified by DST / DSIR. Click here for more details.
  • Candidates applying under Part-time category for research programme may confirm whether the current organization/industry/institution in which you are working is situated within commutable distance from IIT Madras.
  • For candidates applying under various categories of Research admission which requires sufficient work experience, the experience will be reckoned based on the last date for submission of online application. The work experience acquired after completion of the qualifying degree (i.e. U.G/P.G degree as per eligibility criteria) will be only considered as valid.

Applications are invited from eligible candidates for admission to Ph.D. and M.S. (by Research) programmes under regular/part-time/external schemes of IIT Madras. Half-Time Research Assistantship (HTRA) funded by MHRD as well as fellowships from other funding agencies like CSIR, UGC, DST, ICMR, AICTE etc. are available for those who have qualified for these schemes. Shortlisted candidates will be called for “test and interview” or “interview” by the Selection Committees of the respective departments from time to time. Candidates can apply to pursue Direct Ph.D. programme in Engineering/Sciences/Management/Humanities & Social Sciences stream after their B.Tech / BE. For more details including eligibility criteria for applying to Direct Ph.D. programme, refer the Research Admission Brochure [S.No.5.1.2]. Meritorious M.S. scholars under Engineering/Management stream with minimum CGPA of 8.0 on a 10.0 point scale are eligible to upgrade to the Ph.D. programme in the same department and will receive two degrees (M.S.+Ph.D.) on completion of the programme.

 GENERAL POINTS TO BE NOTED

  • Candidates who are not able to upload the required documents due to COVID-19 pandemic situation, may upload the documents currently available as provisional or upload an undertaking to submit the required valid documents viz; OBC-NCL/EWS certificate at the time of test or at the earliest possible.

  • All the communication(s) [such as issuance of Test/Interview Call letters, Offer of Admission letters, etc.] will be made only through Email to the shortlisted/selected candidates. Therefore, the candidates are advised to provide correct Email ID while creating new account and regularly check your email for any updates with respect to your application for admission to Research programme(s) of this institute.

  • Candidates are instructed to confirm whether they are fulfilling the eligibility criteria as provided in the research admission brochure & application portal before applying to Research programme. For registering your application, create a new account or login into your existing account, then fill the necessary fields & upload the relevant documents in the application form and pay the requisite application fee to complete the application process. Application once submitted cannot be withdrawn or deleted.

  • Candidates who wish to apply to various Department(s) or Research Programme(s) should register separate applications and pay the application fee separately subject to fulfilling the eligibility criteria for applying to the concerned Department or Research Programme as mentioned in the Research admission brochure & application portal.

  • Rs.31,000/- p.m. for first 2 years
  • Rs.35,000/- p.m. for subsequent 3 years.
For M.S.
  • Rs.12,400/- p.m. for 2years (additional 6 months with specific recommendation of GTC)

 PRIME MINISTER'S RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP [PMRF]

  • The Prime Minister's Research Fellows (PMRF) Scheme has been designed for improving the quality of research in various higher educational institutions in the country. With attractive fellowships, the scheme seeks to attract the best talent into research thereby realizing the vision of development through innovation. The scheme was announced in the Budget 2018-19. The institutes which can offer PMRF include all the IITs, all the IISERs, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru and some of the top Central Universities/NITs that offer science and/or technology degrees. The candidates will be selected through a rigorous selection process and their performance will be reviewed suitably through a national convention.
  • You are eligible to apply for PMRF only after getting admitted into PhD/Direct PhD at IIT Madras.
  • There are two modes of admission under PMRF – Direct Entry and Lateral Entry.
  • Direct Entry is meant for Newly Admitted PhD & Direct PhD Scholars & Lateral Entry is for ongoing PhD/Direct PhD/Upgraded PhD Scholars.
  • The period of PMRF will be 5 years / 4 years for Direct PhD / PhD scholars respectively.
  • Fellowship under PMRF is Rs. 70000/- for first two years, Rs.75000/- for third year and Rs.80000/- for Last two years.
  • PMRF Scholars are also eligible for contingency grant of Rs.2 Lakhs per annum.
